Fuchinomori Forest was the inspiration for Hayao Miyazaki’s animated masterpiece “My Neighbor Totoro (Tonari no Totoro)” and hence is also known as Totoro Forest. The forest is located in west Tokyo, in the middle of the residential area, a forest that may be called satoyama in Japanese. Satoyama is a traditional concept for forests that live in mutual gain with humans, usually located between a primeval forest and residence areas and hold a rich layer of plants and small animals. Hence the word consists of two parts, sato (where humans live) andyama (mountain or forest).
